What is it?
A set of free, weekly maths classes in five universities across Ireland, for 2nd - 3rd year secondary school students. Participants work in a relaxed, playful environment with college students as well as professional mathematicians, and meet new ideas and skills, which we hope will deepen their interest in the subject. The programme involves a lot of teamwork including team quiz competitions. Students learn through problem-solving related to games like Sets, Dominoes, Mind-reading games and others.
A list of lesson titles includes:
If you are an independent student who is unable to attend our classes but would like to use the materials for self instruction, or a teacher or parent who is interested in running a class/Maths Circle based on these lessons, please feel free to use our Contact Us page.
What's in it for me?
You get to do interesting, interactive, creative maths in a fun environment with like-minded people of your own age. You will develop
your problem-solving skills. We also prepare you for maths competitions like the Purple Comet, Alcumus challenges and others.
Intermediate and Senior Maths Enrichment
Can I get involved?
The Intermediate programme is mostly for TY students but takes some 3rd and 5th Years, while the Senior programme is for 5th and 6th Years. Most students in either are initially invited to join based on their IrMO Round 1 or JC results, but all Senior Cycle students with a love of maths and a willingness to meet a challenge are welcome.
What is it?
A set of free, weekly maths classes in five universities across Ireland, for TY (Intermediate) and 5th/6th (Senior) students. It's run by a group of volunteers consisting of lecturers and the university's best students, all of whom demonstrate passion for and appreciation of the beauty of mathematics. Here, students are shown deeper and more challenging maths than that seen on the school syllabus, and are induced to develop a love of maths and its fun side. Emphasis is placed on creative thinking and problem-solving skills, with the aim of making already talented students more mathematically-minded. The classes also act as practise and training for mathematical Olympiads, the qualifiers for which are run through the classes.
Where?
Classes are run in six universities across Ireland: ATU Sligo, UCC, University of Limerick, Galway, Maynooth and UCD. Follow the links on the bottom left to get more details and find out which centre is convenient for you.
When?
All are on Saturday mornings, except in UL, where classes take place on Thursday evenings. See links for
exact times.
Benefits?
You will get to do fun, stimulating maths and more advanced topics than those covered on the Leaving Cert, improve your problem solving skills, and meet people of your own age who share your interests. The classes also improve your chances in the various Mathematical Olympiads.
