Irish Maths Olympiad Round 1 will take place in schools next week (11-15 November).

Teachers are invited to register at

The Irish Mathematical Olympiad is an annual event which is open to all students from second level schools in Ireland. Participation in the first round will allow your teachers to identify any students in your school who have a special affinity for mathematics. These students will be invited to Mathematics Enrichment classes that are being offered at universities around the country.

Mathematics Enrichment classes seek to help students develop valuable problem solving skills through free lessons designed to nurture creative thinking and love of mathemat...

Congratulations to team Ireland's return home from the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad in UK, Bath for an exceptional result!

Lucas Bachmann won Ireland’s 2nd ever Silver medal in Ireland’s 32 years of participation in the competition. The 6th year student from Glenstal Abbey School, Co. Limerick achieved a mind-blowing perfect score on the first day of the competition, finishing the two day exam with a solid Silver - only two points away from Gold.

The team will also be celebrating two Honorable Mentions - these are awarded to students who were able to fully solve at least one problem - itself a wonderful achievement in this difficult competition. Laura Cosgrave from Midleton Co...

Sarah Tallon and Breda Disney were honoured with the Award for Irish Teachers of Mathematics in Cork on May 26th in the Aula Maxima of the University College Cork.

The award ceremony was special, earning the endearing nickname of “The Oscars of Mathematics” from Prof. Stephen Buckley, MRIA, head of the Maynooth University Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Young Mathematical Olympians captivated the audience with artistic interludes: bass and violin performances from Alison Riordan and Archie Conolly, poetry, inspiring speeches by Laura Cosgrave and Tianyiwa Xie, and a modern dance performance by Sarah Lane and her teammates from the Joan Denise Moriarty School of Dance, Cork. The Mathematics Enrichment programme are a set of free, weekly mathematics classes for secondary school students in five universities (Maynooth University, NUI Galway, University of Limerick, UCC and UCD) that are designed to foster problem solving skills and expose students to mathematics they might not otherwise see in the standard curriculum. Mathematics Enrichment participants work in a relaxed, playful environment where they meet new ideas and activities designed to deepen their interest in the subject. Emphasis is placed on creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Participating students get a chance to participate in mathematics competitions such as the Irish Mathematical Olympiad, the Inter...

Last week a group of 40 Transition Year students participated in a week of work experience organised by the School of Mathematical Sciences during 21-25 January 2019.

The event, now in its 4th year in its current format, offers TY students resource materials and the teaching skills and practice which enable them to work as tutors for maths circles for the younger 1st year students in their own school, or for primary school students in nearby schools. Maths circles are lunchtime or after-school weekly maths clubs based on Maths Circles Ireland teaching materials, and are typically run by a teacher with the help of tutors. Delivery of Maths Circles across Ireland is coordinated by the Irish Mathematical...

Designed and tested in UCC and rolled out around Ireland by the IMT with support from Science Foundation Ireland, Maths Circles and Junior Mathematics Enrichment create a nurturing environment where school children can fall in love with mathematics and develop their intuition and problem-solving skills. Jessica Weitbrecht has brought these initiatives to Rwanda, as outreach activities of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

"We ran about 10 three-hour Saturday sessions for local senior cycle students using the junior material from the UCC website, and reached 90 students… We're also running a few sessions for teachers - three so far. They're starting to really enjoy it…There are abou...

Laura Cosgrave and Tianyiwa Xie, members of team Ireland at the European Girls Mathematical Olympiad 2018 have started a Science blog by, and largely for, girls. Their first entries, which can be viewed  here , make a promising blend of insightful thought and intense feeling.

Here we present a moving excerpt of the upcoming entry by Tianyiwa about her experience at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2018 in Romania.

To celebrate the anniversary of George Boole, the Irish Mathematical Trust have made all of our resources from the Mathematicians in Our Lives series freely available at

The resources are complete lessons for all ages in second level education including lesson plans, student worksheets and other classroom resources.

We currently have two Mathematicians in our series, George Boole, one of the fathers of modern computing and William Rowen Hamilton, that discovered a new number system, but there have been murmurings of a new mathematician being added soon, apparently he is quite a slippery fellow.

Although the lesson plans are new freely available, we still ask that yo...

Established in 2017, the first award received over 200 nominations. The award was won by Irene Stone and runner up Breda Disney for their commendable work in teaching mathematics.

This year, we at the Irish Mathematical Trust hope to see even more nominations than last year and are looking forward to seeing how inspiring mathematics teachers can be.

We are grateful to the Frank Kenny fund at the Community Foundation for...
