Silver Medal for Ireland at IMO 2019

July 23, 2019

Congratulations to team Ireland's return home from the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad in UK, Bath for an exceptional result!

Lucas Bachmann won Ireland’s 2nd ever Silver medal in Ireland’s 32 years of participation in the competition. The 6th year student from Glenstal Abbey School, Co. Limerick achieved a mind-blowing perfect score on the first day of the competition, finishing the two day exam with a solid Silver - only two points away from Gold.

The team will also be celebrating two Honorable Mentions - these are awarded to students who were able to fully solve at least one problem - itself a wonderful achievement in this difficult competition. Laura Cosgrave from Midleton College,  Co. Cork and Tianyiwa Xie from Alexandra College, Dublin have earned these awards.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the world’s annual championship for school-age mathematicians. This year’s event was the biggest ever with 621 contestants from 112 countries taking part in the competition. The teams of China and the USA topped the country ranking at equal scores, followed by the teams of the two Koreas.

Ireland was represented at the competition by the following students:

Lucas Bachmann, 6th year, from Glenstal Abbey School, Co. Limerick

Tianyiwa Xie, 5th year,  from Alexandra College, Dublin

Linhong Chen, 5th year,  from The Institute of Education, Dublin

Alex Hanley, 5th year,  from Lucan Community College,  Co. Dublin

Laura Cosgrave, 5th year,  from Midleton College,  Co. Cork

Yunjie Wang, 5th year,  from Christian Brothers College, Cork

The Irish team was led by Bernd Kreussler from Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and Gordon Lessells from the University of Limerick. Andrew Smith from UCD School of Mathematical Sciences acted as Observer with the leader.

Ireland’s participation at the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad was made possible by the continued financial support of the Department of Education and Skills (DES). An SFI Discovery grant, the Frank Kenny Fund at the Community Foundation for Ireland and Alder Capital DAC provided support for team selection and training. The students were trained in mathematics enrichment centres in Limerick, Maynooth, UCC and UCD. The IMO squad also attended special training camps in UCC in Limerick.
