Team Ireland wins Silver and Bronze at the 6th EGMO

April 15, 2017

The Sixth European Girls Mathematical Olympiad took place in Zurich, Switzerland, on 6-12 April, and it was the largest so far with the participation of 32 European and 12 guest teams.
The 168 participants are among the most motivated and talented young female mathematicians in their countries, where they won top places in national selection contests in order to qualify for EGMO.

Ireland had its best result yet with a Silver, a Bronze medal and an Honourary Mention, and for the
first time entered the ranks of the top half strongest teams. Ireland was represented by a team of four students:

Antonia Huang, Mount Anville Secondary School, Dublin (Bronze)
Anna Mustata, Bishopstown Community School, Cork (Silver)
Jean O'Brien, Castleknock Community College, Dublin 15 (Honourable Mention)
Yuelin Xiong, Alexandra College, Dublin
together with coaches Anca and Andrei Mustata, both UCC lecturers.

The team had a fabulous time and fully enjoyed the interaction with the team members from other
countries, the fun-packed schedule, the competition and its outcomes.

The EGMO 2017 was hosted by ETH Zurich and Zurich University in their beautiful hilly campuses, and bene ted from impeccable organization by the association IMOSuisse - a member of the Associations of Swiss Scienti c Olympiads - led by Viviane Kehl, herself a former EGMO participant.
