The Eighth European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) was held in Kyiv, Ukraine, on 7-13 April 2019, with the participation of teams from 50 countries, of which 36 official European and 14 guest countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, USA and others. The 196 contestants are among the most motivated and talented young female mathematicians in their countries, where they won top places in national selection contests in order to qualify for EGMO.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine under the auspices of UNESCO. Participants enjoyed a week of competition, Ukranian culture, making new friendships, and many surprises under the impeccable organisation of the local committee led by Andrii Anikushyn.

The EGMO competition is similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad; it consists of two exams given in two separate days; on each day, 4 1/2 hours are available to solve three problems. All contest problems can be found on the official EGMO page.

The team of four representing Ireland at EGMO 2019 has brought home one bronze medal and two honourable mentions. This raises to six the overall number of EGMO medals obtained by Ireland along the years. All six medals have been won in the past five years.

From the opening ceremony to the closing party, the Irish team had a fabulous time at EGMO 2019. For an informal report by one of the team members, check the Science Angles blog.
